Most people use deodorants of one type or another. After all, who wants to smell bad? Commercial deodorants are generally accepted by most people with little questioning about what they are made of, or how they work. It is what it is…or is it? Let us explore deodorants and how they work.
Our bodies perspire as a natural function of our skin. In general, our perspiration does not have much odor (some foods can cause odor). In the areas of our bodies like armpits where perspiration cannot escape or evaporate, bacteria can grow in the moisture there. It is the bacteria that causes body odor to occur.
Most deodorants are designed to stop bacteria from growing and producing the "stink". They are also designed to be cheap to make. The majority of deodorants are mostly water with a bunch of chemicals added to it. We will list some of those chemicals later.
Most of the areas where body odor can occur are also areas where there is a concentration of lymph nodes. The lymphatic system is part of our immune system, and circulates fluids throughout our bodies. If chemicals are applied to the skin in the region of lymph nodes, those chemicals can be circulated throughout the body. Try putting a garlic clove in your shoe and see how long it takes before you can taste or smell it.
So the concern is this; if I put chemicals under my arms, what might those chemicals do to the rest of my body because those chemicals might be circulated by the lymph system. Below is a partial list of some of the chemicals found in one or more of the following brands; Dove™, Jeremy's™, and Lume™:
alpha-isomethyl ionone, Behenyl Alcohol, bht, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, coumarin, Dimethicone, Dipropylene glycol, disodium edta, hexyl cinnamal, Isoamyl Laurate, Panthenol, Pentylene Glycol, Phenethyl Alcohol., Phenylpropanol, poloxamine 1307, Polyglyceryl-10 Oleate, Polyglyceryl-3 Caprylate (Plant), Potassium Hydroxide, Propanediol, propylene glycol, simethicone, Sodium Benzoate, Sodium Stearate, Sodium Stearoyl Glutamate, Tetrasodium Glutamate Diacetate.
Now some good news…Fantastic Foragers has formulated a whole-body deodorant made from plant materials and plant extracts that has none of the chemicals listed above. The plants and extracts stop the growth of the bacteria that can cause odor, they soften and protect the sensitive skin areas where you might use it, and they have a mild and pleasant scent. The product is named Breeze, and it comes in two forms; an emollient cream that can be easily applied wherever you want to, and a stick that you can use like any commercial deodorant. An additional benefit of Breeze is that it has also been shown to reduce irritation and itching in some of those more private areas that might need attention.
So, what are the ingredients in Breeze? Jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis), Water, Cetyl alcohol (from palm oil), Shea butter (Vitellaria paradoxa), Beeswax, Blackberry leaf, (Rubus fruitcosus), Chickweed, (Stellaria media), Lemon balm, (Melissa officinalis), Spikenard (Nardostachys jatamansi).
